The short version
Your speed for the engine sound is worked out from your location inside your browser. Features that need a place (the weather, the maps and navigation) send a position to the services that answer them, as described below. Creating an account is optional and stores only what is described below. We use anonymous, cookieless usage analytics by Firebase Analytics.
Location
The site asks your browser for your location so the engine sound can follow your speed; that is worked out on your device. Some features send a position to answer a request: the weather in the scenes and along a route (Open-Meteo, from your browser), and the map, the road data for the scenes and the FSD view, search, routes and places nearby (OpenFreeMap, Photon, OSRM and Valhalla, Overpass and similar OpenStreetMap services, mostly through our server, which does not keep it). If you sign in, your recent destinations, saved places and any drives you record as GPX are stored with your account in Firebase so they follow you from car to car. Your location is never sold or used for advertising.
Optional account
You can use TeslaSound without an account. If you choose to sign in, we use Firebase Authentication (Google or email and password). Your email address, display name, settings and driver profiles are stored in Firebase, a Google Cloud service, so that they follow you from car to car. A driver profile holds that driver's settings, car, places and recent destinations, Theater library (My list, viewing progress and history), DJ cues, game scores, dock and widgets, and an optional PIN kept only as a salted hash. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email address and name from Google; if you sign in with a password, the password is handled by Firebase and never reaches us in readable form.
Connecting Spotify needs an account. The Spotify sign-in tokens are then kept with your account in Firebase, readable only by our server, so Music works in every car you sign in to; Disconnect deletes them. Spotify receives the playback commands you give.
Data stored on your device
- Your settings (volume, car, scene, units, theme, colour), in your browser's local storage.
- Without an account, your drivers, places and recent destinations, Theater library, DJ cues, game scores, dock and widgets, in the same storage.
- Your approximate last position (to about a kilometre) so the scenes, the weather and the FSD view start where you are. The map also remembers the place it last showed.
- Words the on-screen keyboard learns from your typing. They stay on the device and are never synced.
- With Offline map cache on, map tiles of the places you view or drive, up to 300 MB, in the browser's cache.
- If you are signed in, a sign-in session kept by Firebase Authentication in your browser's storage. It is strictly necessary for the account to work.
Other services
- Theater loads films from the Internet Archive, artwork from TMDB and Wikimedia, and trailers from YouTube in its privacy-enhanced mode, from your browser.
- Music talks to Spotify through our server; "Play in this browser" loads Spotify's own player.
- Voice search and dictation use your browser's speech recognition, which in some browsers (Chrome, for example) sends the audio to the browser maker.
- When you add a website shortcut, our server opens the address once to check whether the site can be shown in a window.
Analytics and cookies
We use anonymous, cookieless usage analytics by Firebase Analytics (Google). It tells us things like which pages are opened, which looks are picked (theme, colour and skin changes) and roughly what device and country. It runs in Google's consent mode with analytics and advertising storage denied, so it sets no cookies, does not identify you and is never used for advertising. Firebase keeps a random installation ID in your browser's storage so the service can work. There is no cookie banner because there are no tracking cookies: the only cookie is a strictly necessary one that protects the Spotify connection step, set when you connect Spotify and gone after ten minutes.
Hosting
The site is hosted by Vercel and account data is stored in Firebase (Google Cloud). Like most hosts, they keep technical server logs (such as IP address and requested page) for security and operation.
Your rights
We keep as little about you as possible, so there is usually little to look up. You can clear the data on your device at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser. To access, correct or delete your account data, or to ask any other privacy question, contact hello@heyyykatchy.com.
Children
TeslaSound is intended for drivers and is not directed at children.
